For most job seekers, posting a resume on the Net is a key part of the job search process, as employers use various posting sites and resume databases to find qualified candidates.

Unless relocation is an option, you should focus your resume posting efforts on local job sites, specialty job sites, and corporate job sites.

If confidentiality or privacy are concerns, you'll be advised to create a confidential resume for online posting.

Local Job Sites

Unless you are conducting a long-distance search (or are willing to relocate), you should post your resume on local sites – i.e., sites that serve your local geography.

To find local sites, go to Google.com and start a search using the keywords "resume" and "XXX" (XXX = the city where you live or want to live). This will provide you with a list of sites that serve your local area or targeted geography.

How to Post Your Resume Online: 5 Steps

Each posting site has its own specific system and requirements, so it's important that you take to time to familiarize yourself with each site and keep a record of where you posted your resume, how you posted it, etc.

For example, some sites request that you submit your resume in a specific format (i.e., plain text or MS Word), while others will accept resumes in any format: MS Word, plain text, rich text, PDF

Each site provides instructions on how to post your resume. Be sure to follow the site's specific instructions. Typically, posting your resume will involve cutting and pasting the resume text into an online form or uploading the MS Word version of your resume.
